On Friday, August 15, 2025, Costa Rica will observe Mother’s Day.
According to Article 148 of the Labor Code, this is a mandatory paid public holiday, which means that all employees are entitled to both the observance of the holiday and the corresponding payment, depending on their wage modality.
Based on the applicable wage modality, the applicable payment rules are as follows:
- Monthly, biweekly, or weekly pay in the commercial sector: The holiday is already included in the regular monthly salary, so no additional payment is required if the holiday is observed. If the employee works, an additional regular day's wage must be added to reach double pay.
- Weekly pay in the non-commercial sector: The holiday must be paid even if the employee does not work. If the employee works, they are entitled to double pay for the full workday.
Overtime must be paid at 150%, calculated on the basis of double pay, as this is a mandatory paid holiday.
Further information will soon be provided on the specific terms applicable to the public holiday on August 31.
