#CostaRica 🇨🇷 #BDS_Informs: This Monday, December 1, Will Be a Public Holiday: What You Need to Know to Enjoy It

On December 1, 2025, Costa Rica will celebrate “Abolition of the Army Day”, declared as a non-mandatory paid holiday under Article 148 of the Labor Code.

Regarding the compensation for this holiday, and depending on the type of employment arrangement, the following rules apply:

  • Monthly or biweekly salary: The holiday is already included in the salary. If work is performed, an additional day of pay (or equivalent hours) must be paid. Overtime is compensated at double time plus 50%.
  • Weekly, daily, or hourly salary: If no work is performed, there is no obligation to pay. If work is performed, the regular workday is paid, while overtime is paid at time and a half based on the regular hourly rate.

The holiday is not transferable and must be observed on Monday, December 1 itself. If the employee does not work that day, no additional payment or compensatory rest applies; if they are required to work, the above rules apply.
