#Honduras 🇭🇳 #BDS_Informs: Labor Implications for Employers and Employees of the May 1st Holiday

Please note that Friday, May 1st, 2026, on which International Labor Day is observed, is a mandatory national holiday in Honduras.

From a labor and business perspective, this date triggers specific legal obligations for employers and protected rights for employees, making its proper management essential.

In accordance with Article 339 of the Labor Code, this holiday is non-transferable; consequently, it must be observed on the Friday of its occurrence. Although Legislative Decree No. 50-2003 allows to move certain holidays, May 1st is among the dates excluded from such provision.

In cases where, due to the nature of operations, work is required during the holiday, the provisions of Article 340 of the Labor Code must be observed, which requires:

  • Payment of double wages for the time effectively worked during the holiday.
  • Granting a compensatory day of rest within the same week, in accordance with applicable regulations.

In this context, companies are advised to plan shift scheduling and operational coverage in advance, in order to ensure business continuity without breaching applicable labor provisions.

International Labor Day also holds historical significance in the country, particularly with reference to the 1954 Banana Workers’ Strike, one of the most significant labor movements in the recognition of labor and social rights.

For specific inquiries regarding the application of these provisions or the calculation of corresponding payments, our team is available to provide the necessary guidance.
