This Friday, February 27, an unmovable public holiday will be observed in the Dominican Republic: National Independence Day, and therefore the date will be a non-working day throughout the national territory.
Pursuant to Law 139-97 on Public Holidays, this date is not subject to transfer and must be observed in all establishments across the country, in both the public and private sectors. Accordingly, employees must resume their regular duties on Monday, March 2.
In cases where, due to the nature of the business, work is required during the holiday, employees must receive additional compensation, as established in the Labor Code.
February 27 commemorates the proclamation of National Independence in 1844, marking the birth of the Dominican Republic as a free and sovereign nation. The independence movement was led by founding fathers Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Matías Ramón Mella, whose ideals of freedom and sovereignty form an essential part of the national identity.
At BDS Asesores, we remind organizations of the importance of ensuring the correct application of unmovable public holidays in order to prevent labor contingencies and guarantee compliance with current legislation.
