#CostaRica 🇨🇷 #BDSLaborAlert: Costa Rica will become an ideal destination for digital nomads following second discussion approval of tax benefits
On July 14, 2021, the Legislative Assembly approved in second discussion Bill No. 22.215 titled “Law to attract teleworkers and remote service providers of an international nature”. This Bill intends to foster visits from the so-called “digital nomads”, in order to boost the country’s economy in the light of the effects caused by the pandemic.
According to the law, these “teleworkers and remote service providers” or digital nomads refer to foreign citizens whose labor duties allow them to work remotely, even based in a different country. This new regulation intends to create incentives for these individuals to choose Costa Rica as the place where they can perform their services remotely.
This law provides these long-stay tourists the chance to stay in the country with their families for one year (extendable for an additional year). Also, it will allow them to import their computer and communication equipment exempt from any taxes, as well as open savings bank accounts in Costa Rica and use their drivers’ licenses without the need to obtain a Costa Rican license, among other tax benefits.
There is a widespread competition when it comes to attracting digital nomads, as during 2020, and as a result of the Covid-19 crisis, telework has been implemented in 88% of companies vs. 4% that were using it before said crisis.
