#CostaRica 🇨🇷 #BDS_LaborAlert: Law Granting Bereavement Leave for Workers Comes Into Effect

Written by BDS Asesores | Jan 7, 2025 2:00:00 AM

On Tuesday, December 3, 2024, the Law Establishing Paid Leave for the Death of Relatives to Protect the Right to Grieve was published in Item No. 195 to Official Gazette No. 227. This law takes effect immediately upon its publication.

As of Wednesday, December 4, employees are entitled to paid leave in the event of the death of a close relative: specifically, 3 business days for the death of a first-degree relative by blood or marriage and 1 business day for the death of a second- or third-degree relative by blood or marriage.

Since this is a new form of leave, employers must establish internal regulations outlining the requirements and procedures employees must follow to request it.

On our BDS Tools platform, you can find a model labor policy for granting this leave. If you are already a BDS client, we encourage you to contact your designated advisor for further information and recommendations on implementing this new leave policy.

Additionally, on Thursday, December 12, we will host the webinar "New Rules on Medical Leaves and other Leaves of Absence," which will address, among other topics, the scope of these new leave entitlements.
