#CostaRica 🇨🇷 #BDS_MigrationAlert: New Measures Established for Passport Delivery

On Wednesday, June 7th, through Official Gazette No. 101, the General Department of Immigration (DGME) published Resolution No. D.JUR-0141-05-2023-JM, which establishes new measures regarding the deadlines for the delivery of passports requested by Costa Ricans from said Department.

The most important aspects from this resolution are as follows:

  1. The deadline for delivering passports requested after the publication of the aforementioned resolution is exceptionally extended to thirty calendar days, replacing the previous ten-day deadline for delivering the passport to the interested party, as established in Article 305 of the Migration Control Regulation (Executive Decree 36769-G).

  2. The Migration Management Office of the DGME is authorized not to issue new passports to individuals who have a document with a validity period of more than one year.

  3. The Migration Management Office of the DGME is authorized to apply exceptions to the aforementioned cases in situations of duly justified and documented emergencies.
The DGME stated that these measures are being taken based on the "unprecedented" demand for passports following the implementation of the Biometric Passport for the Bicentennial project, as well as the international crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the post-pandemic scenario, which has resulted in a shortage of electronic components integrated into the biometric passport production.
