Accordingly, employees **must resume their regular duties on Monday, March 2.** In cases where, due to the nature of the business, work is required during the holiday, employees must receive **additional compensation**, as established in the Labor Code. **February 27** commemorates the proclamation of National Independence in 1844, **marking the birth of the Dominican Republic** as a free and sovereign nation. The independence movement was led by founding fathers Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Matías Ramón Mella, whose ideals of freedom and sovereignty form an essential part of the national identity.
